With NASA gearing up to revisit the moon and with long-range plans for a manned mission to Mars, interstellar sightings are continuing apace. The latest development involved a visit to our solar system in October by what was officially called a small comet or asteroid.
The unexpected visitor 1/2017 U1 'Oumuamua was initially picked up by the NASA-funded University of Hawaii Pan-STARRS1 telescope as it rocketed past the sun. Traveling at nearly 200,000 miles per hour, the cigar-shaped asteroid is described as originating beyond the solar system and possessing such an extreme orbit that it is unlikely to pass through the solar system again.
With its highly elongated shape giving it an aspect ratio unlike any asteroid or comet ever observed, 'Oumuamua had likely been traveling through the Milky Way for hundreds of millions of years, lacking star system attachment, prior to entering this solar system. It did not seem to emit radio waves or other types of communication but may provide vital clues as to the origin of solar systems.
